SEB issues a call to observe Earth Hour
This Saturday, 28 March, the nature conservation organisation WWF (World Wide Fund) and SEB Pank are calling on people to observe the hour-long Earth Hour, when lights burning unnecessarily will be turned off at 20:30 Estonian time. With the energy saved by turning off lights, WWF wishes to draw attention to climate change and global warming. SEB has been participating in Earth Hour, both in Estonia and abroad, for six years.
Riho Unt, Chairman of the Management Board of SEB: “For SEB, the issue of sustainability is very important; our bank has been using green energy since 2010. At our branches, we offer our clients paperless service, mainly aimed at promoting innovative behaviour and saving trees, clean water and energy. Earth Hour is a good example of a worldwide initiative allowing those talking the talk to walk the walk when it comes to sustainability. In order to preserve for our children a living environment they deserve, we first have to change our attitudes with respect to the Earth and the use of natural resources. As part of our participation in the Earth Hour, we will turn off the illuminated logo and signs on the bank’s buildings and lights inside its offices for an hour.”
The purpose of Earth Hour is to reduce the quantity of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and to get people to think about conserving the environment. Earth Hour first began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million households turned off their lights for an hour. In 2008, as many as 50 million people participated in the initiative, thus developing it into a worldwide sustainability movement. In 2009, the goal of the movement was to take Earth Hour to a new level by achieving the participation of 1 billion people. Today, as many as 162 countries across the world will be participating in Earth Hour.
