SEB was named the world’s twelfth strongest bank
In the annual ranking prepared by Bloomberg Markets Magazine, SEB ranked as the world’s twelfth strongest bank and the second strongest bank in Europe. Compared to last year, SEB’s position in Europe has improved by one place.
“It is remarkable that the top three banks in Europe are from the Nordic countries. In the continued unstable economic environment this gives our private and business clients a feeling of security that banks can muster sufficient strength to face possible setbacks in our changing world,” noted Allan Parik, Chairman of the Management Board of SEB.
Bloomberg named Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Bank as the world’s strongest bank. OP Financial Group was named Europe’s strongest bank. In Europe, the 20 strongest banks, besides SEB, included Swedbank from Sweden (13th place), UBS from Switzerland (16th to 17th place), Handelsbanken from Sweden (19th place) and Credit Suisse Group from Switzerland (20th place).
To ascertain the world’s strongest banks, Bloomberg compared banks whose assets total at least USD 100 billion. The banks were examined based on five categories: the ratio of core capital to risk-weighted exposure amounts, the proportion of impaired loans in all assets, loan reserves as compared to impaired assets, and the ratio of deposits to loans and the rates of return thereon.
