Parents wish for international careers for their children
More than one half of the parents in the Baltic States expect their children to work abroad in the future, analysis by SEB and a survey by Mindscan reveal.
More than one-half of the parents in Estonia would like their children to work abroad. In Latvia and Lithuania, 56 and 54 per cent of the parents, respectively, would like their children to pursue careers in another country. Those whose children have studied abroad or plan to do so in the future make up only 18 per cent in Estonia, whereas in Latvia and Lithuania they make up 24 and 22 per cent, respectively.
“Parents with higher incomes are likely to select universities abroad for their children. However, no matter what their income levels, just one-third of the parents would like their children to pursue careers in Estonia. This is yet more proof that working life is changing. The working environment is becoming increasingly international with each passing year, and working abroad is increasingly considered to be a component in a successful career,” commented Jaanus Kaik, Head of SEB Private Banking.
Nearly one-half of the residents in Estonia and in Lithuania believe that successful careers await young people who have completed IT degrees. The same view is held by 36 per cent of the residents in Latvia. In all three Baltic States, medicine and finance are considered to hold good prospects as well.
*The data used is based on SEB’s analysis and a survey conducted by Mindscan in all three Baltic States in 2015, with a total of 1788 participants.
