Children could be included in the planning of the family budget
Sixty-five per cent of the residents of Estonia are convinced that the inclusion of children in the planning of the family budget is the best way to teach them how to be prudent with money. The SEB analysis and Mindscan survey also revealed that paying an allowance for chores performed at home and limiting pocket money is also considered to be important.
One out of every two residents of Estonia believes that the responsibility for teaching children about how to be wise with money falls upon the parents. In the opinion of one quarter of respondents, schools should also contribute to the teaching of children, with financial literacy being a mandatory part of the curriculum.
“In all three of the Baltic states, it is believed that when it comes to sharing knowledge about money with children, the contribution of parents as well as schools is important. The ability to effectively organise one’s money matters is important when it comes to preparing for life as an adult, regardless of the speciality in which a young person decides to continue their education or begin their career,” commented Chairman of the Management Board of SEB Allan Parik.
“SEB wishes to make its own contribution, in order to raise the level of awareness of Estonia’s youth when it comes to being prudent with money. This is why nearly 90 volunteer SEB employees will be visiting Estonian schools this autumn, to share their knowledge of how to be wise with money with students,” added Parik.
Starting on 12 October and continuing until the end of the year, volunteer SEB employees will be carrying out lectures on how to be wise with money in schools across Estonia, where the topic will be the fundamentals of management and the planning of income and expenditure. During the lectures, no banking services will be advertised.
*The data used is based on SEB’s analysis and a survey conducted by Mindscan in all three Baltic states in 2015, with a total of 1788 participants.
