SEB: Young people also using bank cards for small purchases
The SEB Baltic Household Outlook has revealed that 2015 saw bank card use grow in each of the Baltic States, with those aged 25 to 34 being the most active card users. In Estonia, the average amount of a card payment (EUR 10) is the lowest among those under 25, which shows that they prefer to use bank cards for small purchases as well.
The share of purchases completed with bank cards in 2015, as compared to 2014, grew by 17.5 per cent in Lithuania, 17 per cent in Latvia and 6.5 per cent in Estonia.
“Although the use of bank cards has grown significantly in the other Baltic States in recent years, Estonia is nevertheless several years ahead of its neighbours to the south. In 2015, almost 12 payments per month, on average, were made using the same bank card at shops in Estonia. Card holders in Latvia and Lithuania made seven and five payments per month, respectively, using the same bank card. At the same time, shops in Estonia recorded seven payments per card per month in 2009, and five payments per month in 2005,” remarked Mihkel Nestor, economic analyst for SEB Estonia.
In the Baltic States, the most active group of card users are those aged 25 to 34. In 2015, their transactions made up 31 per cent of all card transactions in Estonia, 24 per cent in Latvia, and 29 per cent in Lithuania. In Estonia, bank cards are also used most often for small daily purchases by those under 25, with their payments averaging EUR 10 in value; less than in the other age groups.
