SEB started offering contactless cards
As of today, SEB is offering its customers contactless cards. For the time being, the new function is supported by MasterCard debit and credit cards; however, there are also plans to expand it to other card types in the future. In addition, a terminal with contactless payment capability is required to make a contactless payment.
‘We launched contactless cards at a time when the share of SEB terminals supporting this payment method exceeded 60 per cent of all SEB terminals. By the end of the year, this figure will increase to 70 per cent. All SEB smart terminals support the new function. As a result of our negotiations with VISA and MasterCard, we anticipate a further increase in this figure in the near future. Our goal is to offer broader opportunities for use to a novel and convenient payment method. Also, we are currently developing solutions which would enable us to make all payments in the future contactless,’ said Meelis Nurk, Head of SEB Baltic Cards, commenting on the innovation.
To activate the contactless function offered by SEB, the first purchase has to be made using the PIN. For security reasons, the system will occasionally request entry of the PIN in order to confirm contactless payments. In Estonia, contactless payments can be made within a limit of EUR 10. In other countries, the contactless payment limits may differ from that applicable in Estonia. Mainly, the limits of contactless transactions in Europe fall between 20 and 40 Euros, which is why we recommend that our customers who travel frequently consider the contactless payment limit of their card. SEB customers can change the card limit conveniently in their Internet Bank.
