Omniva to build a new sorting centre in Lithuania with SEB green loan
In the second quarter of 2024, Omniva LT, a subsidiary of Eesti Post AS will open a new modern automated sorting centre in Kaunas. The construction of the new centre will be financed by SEB with a green loan of 27 million euros.
The sorting centre covers an area of over 21,000 m2 and will be located close to Kaunas Airport and the planned Rail Baltic route. The energy need of the centre will be covered by solar panels.
"With the opening of the new sorting centre, we are moving strategically closer to the European and Central Asian markets, where we are steadily growing our business," commented Mart Mägi, Chairman of the Management Board at Omniva, on the establishment of the Kaunas centre, adding that “the new and modern sorting centre will certainly improve logistics in the region and meet the demands of a rapidly growing parcel market and of the consumers.”
According to Mägi, the Kaunas centre will be built bearing in mind all the sustainability objectives of the company. “Therefore, we are pleased to note that Omniva's new sorting centre will be the largest new development in the Baltics to date to qualify for SEB’s green loan," said the Chairman of the Management Board of the logistics company.
The purpose of the investment is to automatise and centralise the sorting of parcels at the Lithuanian market, establish a regional centre and be an attractive partner to large e-commerce platforms.
Peep Jalakas, Head of SEB Corporate Banking: " Omniva’s new sorting centre in Lithuania is a great example of how companies can contribute to the implementation of sustainable solutions. The energy class of the building is A++, being 38% lower than the threshold established in Lithuania for Nearly Zero Energy Buildings. SEB is proud to support the ambitious project of Omniva, which not only supports business growth and automates work processes, but also represents a major step towards sustainable development."
So far, Omniva has involved green financing also in the decarbonisation of its car fleet; however, the new sorting centre will be the first green loan project for the company.
